Antoni Karwowski – Sung Neungkyung – performance from the East in the “Eastern Gallery” and more

On May 9th 2013 in Lodz two performances were presented by Antoni Karwowski (Poland) and Sung Neungkyung (South Korea). Both were a part of a Polish-Korean exhibition entitled: Name of the Father? Name of the Mother! organised during the 5th Art and Documentation Festival. The exhibition was presented in two spaces – in the Gardener’s House and the Wschodnia [Eastern] Gallery, which is in Wschodnia [Eastern] Street. Antoni Karwowski chose an the neutral space of the Gardener’s House, while Sung Neungkyung decided to use the alternative space of the Wschodnia Gallery, located in an apartment in a building from before WW2.

Between March 22nd and April 19th in the gallery BWA Sokol, Nowy Sącz, Poland a photography exhibition by Manuel Vason was presented. It was titled RE-PERFORMANCE. Between performance and photography, and I had the pleasure to curate this exhibit. Since I am not in a position to write a critical text about an exhibition which I curated, I would like to merely document the show and the performances that took place during the opening. These were performances by Dariusz Fodczuk and Anne Seagrave – one of the artists featured in the exhibition.

Marguerite Duras spoke in a 1975 interview of Jules Michelet’s 1862 text La Sorciere in which Michelet set forward the thesis that, in the Middle Ages, women who were left alone were seen to be in league with the devil. Michelet went on to suggest that this motif is the origin of the western witch; Duras suggests that this has never really changed.

AKCJOMAT Events

We wanted to stress the variety of ephemeral artistic activities devised especially by young artists through organising a series of events entitled Akcjomat. Presented actions originated from both the visual arts and those also coming from the disciplines of theatre, music or dance. Probably the strongest experiences were the situations which affected many senses and engaged the audience not only visually, but also through sounds, tastes and smells.
